The Beacon – November 2021

From the Pastor

Dear Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church Family,

The month of December promises to be a time filled with the hope, peace, joy, and love of Jesus Christ. Over the past few months, our staff and committees have been busy making plans and preparations for the season of Advent that began on November 28. As Christmas celebrations in our culture have become more and more commercialized, holding space in our hearts and our calendars to intentionally observe the season of Advent is important for our faith. My goal as your pastor is to offer opportunities through the ministries of the church to help you keep Christ at the center of your Advent and Christmas celebrations. I am excited for the many ways we will do just that
together this month!

This past Sunday, we had our first Advent Fellowship activity: Advent Wreath Making. If you were unable to attend and would like wreath supplies and a daily wreath-lighting liturgy for your home, please contact the church office. As we move through December, there will be many special opportunities for you to participate in worship, Sunday School, Advent fellowship activities, and outreach. I hope you will mark your calendars and join us for the wonderful ministries you will read about in this newsletter. Let us celebrate the Good News that Christ came over 2000 years ago as we look with hope for the day that Christ will come again!

In Christ,
Rev. Cameron Smith

Food Pantry

In addition to providing food for our pantry clients for November and December, we are looking ahead to what’s needed to fill the Annual Christmas Food Boxes. Each family will receive a box filled with traditional holiday dinner items, plus a tin of cookies, a bag of candy, and a grocery gift card for $25 or $50.

Instead of the usual “Item of the Month”, please take a look at the items needed for the Christmas Boxes and take your pick of what you would like to donate. Perhaps you would like to “Pick an Item for Each Week”. Items Needed: Canned Fruit, Chicken Broth, Corn, Corn Bread Mix (Jiffy), Cranberry Sauce, Cream of Mushroom Soup, Evaporated Milk, Fried Onions, Green Beans, Instant Potatoes, Mac & Cheese, Peas, Pumpkin, Rice, Stuffing Mix, Turkey Gravy, Wrapped Christmas Candy, and Yams. Thank you for making it possible for our Pantry Families to enjoy a special dinner.

Water Mission Open House – November 4th

Water Mission will hold a special event for churches on Wednesday, November 4 th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tours of the International Headquarters will begin every 30 minutes and staff will be available to share ways in which we can become part of the 2022 Walk for Water. A light lunch will be provided. If you are interested in attending, or want more information, please see a member of the Outreach & Mission Committee. Water Mission is located in North Charleston at 1150 Molly Greene Way, Bldg. 1605.

Thornwell Offering – November 21st

For more than 144 years, Thornwell has carried out its mission to walk alongside children and families in need. We will hold a Minute for Missions on Sunday, November 21 st and take a special offering in support of Thornwell children and families. The familiar Turkey Coin Holders will be available for children on November 14th .

“Sponsor an Angel” for Christmas

Again this year, we will provide a package to each child in our Pantry families. The gift will consist of new pajamas and/or a sweatshirt; an age-appropriate game and/or book; and a bag of Christmas goodies. We will also include socks, underwear, and school supplies from our Hands of Christ inventory. You can “Sponsor an Angel” for $25. If you would like to help, please mark your donation “Angel Tree” and either place it in the offering plate or mail it to the church office.
